Mine Closure in Mclean Has Workers Facing Uncertainty

Pennyrile Energy Riveredge will be closing its mining operation in McLean in a few months. The company announced it had been sold and that the mine would soon be shutting down. Now, more than 160 miners have received notice that they will be unemployed.

The news not only caught the workers off-guard but McLean County Judge Executive Edward West as well, who said, “We got a call about the mine at rhino being shut down. And it turns out that yes indeed it is true.”

The County of Mclean is now grappling with how to keep people in its small rural communities now that so many have permanently lost their jobs. With the mine facility ceasing operation, the county’s economy is expected to take a major hit due to the substantial amount of coal severance money it will no longer have coming in.

The first round of miner worker lay-offs are planned to begin on November 1st.
